This time I will be here for 6 weeks only, visiting seagrass meadows of Pulau Tikus (Pulau Seribu, in front of Java) and Derawan (Kalimantan) again. I am working together with Wawan Kiswara (the Indonesian seagrass expert from Jakarta) who is very helpful and has a never-ending hospitality surge. Together with his daughter Nina we had our first long fieldwork day in Pulau Tikus. In Pulau Tikus we could find mono-species meadows of Halodule uninervis like we have in Derawan Island, but the big difference is that here they are still ungrazed.

After 3 weeks we went back. Arriving in Jakarta from Derawan we left already the next day for the last fieldwork on Pulau Pari and Pulau Tikus. My planning was very tight, maybe a little bit to tight because Wawan and I already also worked for weeks without weekends and making long working days (7-22) every day but there is so much to do,! Based on the field station of LIPI on Pulau Pari (=stingray island without stingrays) we could reach Pulau Tikus in 30 minutes. I added some more pictures of the end of experiment on Pulau Tikus. The gaps in the ungrazed seagrass recolonized the sandy gaps (created 20 days ago by us) very fast. So the experiment was a success, now we compare it with the seagrass regrowth in gaps of in the grazed area of Derawan.

  2. Hi Marjolijn,
I am the french tourist who was your sister in foot-pain in Derawan, because of a treacherous stingray… Remember? ๐Ÿ™
I hope you have recovered fine and nothing worse happened. I just discovered your blog today and I’m going to read it carefully the next days, to learn more about the turtles, the seagrass, and follow the progress of your researches (and beach cleaning).
    Take care!!!

  3. @ Corinne: Hey Sister in stingray-pain!

The stingray was not so kind to me. After you left I got a major infection, today, 2 weeks after the sting I still cannot walk and the wound is still inflammated, despite the good care Dokter Wita. All because the mantri (stand in for the docter that gave me the first care) put the unclean scissor 5cm deep inside my foot! Wawan finished all the fieldwork for me so the research is still going great.
Nice that you found my weblog! I should update I more frequently but you now the internet situation on Derawan island ๐Ÿ˜‰ In the next 2 weeks I will update it with new posts! I am also so happy to know your blog, it’s great, except sometimes I have to guess for the french translation ๐Ÿ™‚
What a great overview of how to travel to Derawan! AT the moment I’m back in Jakarta for some last visa things before going back home and where I can finally ask for a major foot-check-up!

Keep on diving & posting such nice stories!

  4. Hey Marjolijn,

    Groetjes MOnique
