After 1 week of preparation the penyu team arrived at Derawan. Here Ibu Heldi invested my last payments in improving her place. Now it feels even more like home and our own research station even!
In the week that my supervisors are here we revisited the seagrass meadows that they sampled in 2003. Sampling the same sites from the river to the open see we saw a lot of variation in species composition, algea cover, morphology. At the moment that I write this article Leon Lamers is travelling back to Nijmegen with +/- 10kg of dried seagras, sea water, and syringes with gas. Sjoerd will analyse the samples when he is back in february, we are looking forward to the results of the plant-nutrient analysis.

What is the species of the sea-horse? Saw a sea-horse in the Mediteranean near Malta but that one was more yellow.

Nou ik heb me even vermaakt met foto’s kijken. Ik heb meteen die hele mooie close-up van die schildpad (uiteraard) als achtergrond gejat voor m’n bureaublad op m’n laptop. Dankje wel! Hij is echt mooi!!
Die beesten zijn zowieso erg groot, groter dan ik verwacht had. Je ziet dat goed op die foto dat er een wordt vastgehouden, of die waarbij er een voor je neus zwemt!
Ik ben echt stik jaloers! Ook al weet ik dat ik nog steeds langs mag komen, zodat ik ze in het echt daar kan zien.
Waarom had er een indo daar een of ander gezichtbeschermer op tijdens het duiken? Is dat tegen de zon? Maar je schrikt de beesten onder water zo wel af!
