How to strengthen coastal #resilience in Kenya? —this was the focus of last week’s workshop in Tiwi, where around 35 of us gathered to exchange ideas. Participants included
representatives from ministries, environmental agencies, Kenya Wildlife Service, county officers, community management unit leaders, Kenyan scientists, and Wageningen colleagues (social scientists and ecologists), along with students eager to contribute and others.
The discussions were thoughtful and lively, with breakout sessions that allowed us to explore different perspectives. A highlight was visiting the #seagrass and reef systems in Tiwi and Diani, and coral restoration projects in Shimoni and Matembwe, Zanzibar. It was a privilege to learn from the people deeply involved in these efforts and to witness the challenges and progress firsthand.
After 21 years, returning to Stonetown & Zanzibar was special and a reminder of the ongoing work needed to protect these coastal ecosystems. Moving forward, we’re focusing on collaborative project proposals to help tackle the resilience challenges we discussed—work that feels even more relevant given the coral loss from recent bleaching.
