Luggage
Ok I’m going on an expedition and I plan to take:
- Backpack with personal stuff (20 kg)
- Aluminium box 80×60x40cm with research equipment (35 kg)
- Aluminium box 60×40x20 with research equipment (15 kg)
- Diving bag (20kg)
- Camera bag (5 kg)
- Handluggage (incl laptop, 10 kg)
How do I get this stuff in Derawan?
First choose your airline carefully. At this moment Malaysia Airlines is the only one that allowes you to take diving equipment, free of charge, up to 10 kg, if you report this when booking the flight. I called them (within The Netherlands: 020 5216262) and explained that I need more free kg’s and got 5 kg extra which I can put in my backpack. So now I can take 20+5 and 10 kg. Let’s hope that they don’t make a problem of my heavy hand luggage and camerabag. KLM allowes an extra dive bag for 80 euro (single trip), so booking KLM only makes sense for me when their ticket is 160 euro cheaper than MH.
Importing research materials was a big hassle with a lot of corruption involved. In the end I received my big box with materials 3 months too late, at the end of my experiment…
I now prefer to order al the materials through my counterpart in Jakarta. Via TIKINDO logistics everything is shipped within Indonesia.
